Fat vs. Muscle

Writer's picture: Rachel CiciglineRachel Cicigline

Question: Muscle weighs more than fat, right? ______________

Answer: No. This is a common misconception. One pound is one pound; the difference is in the amount of space that one pound is occupying. The orange cone represents one pound of fat. It’s big, fluffy, and takes up lots of space. To its side, are red cones, specifically five to represent the amount of space five pounds of muscle occupies vs. that one pound of fat. Muscle does not weigh more than fat, but it’s more dense, lean, and takes up less space. We will save lean muscle vs. bulking for another day. _________ In short, don’t be afraid if the scale goes up as you build muscle and look/feel better.
